Clayton Lewis: Recent Work
April 19th - May 14th 2011 Opening & Artist Reception Thursday, April 21st 6-8pm

Clayton Lewis is an artist who has shown extensively throughout the United States. Currently a resident of Michigan, Lewis earned is BFA at the Swain School of Design in 1982. He then went on to complete his MFA at Parsons School of Design in New York, NY in 1985. Lewis created his recent works of rural and urban landscapes plein-air a style of painting he describes as, “essential to my advancement as an artist and to my general well-being”. Lewis distills his compositions including only the essential line, gesture and color necessary to evoke the essence of place. Striking for their subtlety, Lewis’ works offer the viewer the opportunity to savor the stillness of a moment.

“I measure the success or failure of these paintings by whether they capture a general sense of place with an impression of the intangible elements that I can’t replicate in the studio -- wind, smells, and sounds.” - Clayton Lewis, Ann Arbor Michigan 2011
