John Vliet began painting seriously when he was 14. Through the supportive relationship of his highschool art  teacher  he decided to enroll in art school after graduation. John attended the Swain School of Design where he met David Loeffler Smith. John was enrolled formally from 1982 to 1984. John continued to study painting with David Loeffler Smith until 1989.
 
While oil painting is his primary focus, John works in a variety of mediums from furniture making to metal sculpture to pastels to wood and stone carving.
