Artist’s Statement
Visual Jazz, bringing the theories of fusion into my work, I create paintings that add to the conversation that is Art
Color is the subject of my painting. I use vibrant, intense, and brilliant color choices to engage and compete with an environment filled with increasingly loud visual elements. My color is not naturalistic or decorative and it does not mimic light. My color choices are inspired by personal reactions to the relationships between all color included within the composition of a painting. There is a conversation between the elements of color and the emotions color stimulates. My use of color is not an excuse to splash, brush, and scrape paint while satisfying the whims of my heart, well not that alone. My use of color is a visual science of experimentation, invention, and emotional input. I explore hue, intensity, and value as well as the size, shape, emotion and the relative interactive effects on juxtaposed color choice.
I control spacial relationships through my color decisions. I create volume through color. I create line through the juxtaposition of color. I create my paintings through color. Color defines complex compositional structure based in part upon the influence of the New York School of Abstract expressionism.
I explore the creative line formed by the edges of my color. That line, along with hue and intensity, helps to define a narrative as well as being a tool to define the depth of the picture plane, fostering the illusion of space and volume on the two dimensional surface.
I use a classical narrative to tell the story of the America I see. The narrative invites a viewer into my work, were they can then explore the structure and technique that is defined by my true subject, color, personal, bold, expressive color.
The end results are paintings that capture my own artistic opinions. I create art that is new and specifically mine. My art is clearly identifiable, recognized, and defined as being uniquely my own. The evolution of my work is documented in the progressive dialog that exists from one painting to the next in each cycle.
